This is a glossary of terms used in this section of the wiki. It's not definitive, and kind of speculative.

network service
an instance of software accessed or controlled through a computer network. Examples: web sites, web applications, web APIs, SMTP servers, IRC servers, Jabber servers, Bittorrent peers, MySQL servers.
Web service
A network service that primarily uses the HTTP protocol.
network service software
the software that a network service runs. For example, the email server at antipater.rutagi.net runs the Postfix software. Many network services can run the same network service software.

data or cultural works made available under a Free license.
Developer
someone who writes software.
user
someone who uses software.
deployer
someone who makes software available for use by others through a network.
